Ralph and Ellen McGee. We lived upstairs in the living quarters and downstairs was the trading post. There was a tire service we offered, along with household goods, food and in the very front of the trading post was a post office my grandmother ran. She did mail for so many years she did not have any fingerprints on her little fingers. They then sold the trading post and property and we moved over to the flagstaff area. My name is Betsy Miner. I’d love to hear more stories and see pictures of the trading post. Do I need a permit or permission to do so? Also, will I need a 4 wheel drive vehicle? At times it was very rowdy.
The small Navajo land ranch near the interstate is at the base of a small Mesa (you can see it in the background of the photo of the gate). That mesa was an Airforce Radar base called Winslow Airforce Station. There were extensive ruins of the base on the Mesa including a 3 story radar tower building you could explore. When the gov't moved out, the base was deeded to the Navajo in the 70's. The mesa has since been environmentally cleaned-up by the DoD so no ruins are left.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398633296962611892.post-94485040112174802017-12-15T20:41:44.450-08:002017-12-15T20:41:44.450-08:00Lived at Leupp more than fifty years ago. We did the "touristy" ghost towns of Jerome, etc--but I don't consider a ghost town to have pizza, beer, and too many people!!!
I love REMOTE, lots to explore, and well, heck--just about everything you've shown! Which ones stand out in YOUR mind as the ultimate???
(Thanks SO much for your insights, you young old whippersnapper-LOL!!)Suehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10122524042294993949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398633296962611892.post-7694254446364025692015-08-20T18:52:41.850-07:002015-08-20T18:52:41.850-07:00Thanks so much, Sue! I can recommend a few if you'd like.
I have had a few run-ins with police. All of them occurred in Arizona. Twice I wasn't doing anything illegal, and twice I was trespassing, but there weren't any signs. The cops were pretty friendly (one even apologized for bothering me!) except on one occasion. I was taking a nap in the car on a public road, and the cop gave me a real hard time about it, accusing me of "casing" the neighborhood.
Haha, I love that you figured me for an old guy. I've been told all my life that I've got an old soul, which is always nice to hear :) PlacesThatWerehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08906573012383225740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5398633296962611892.post-44461623407621578082015-08-20T15:48:38.290-07:002015-08-20T15:48:38.290-07:00This is a terrific series and the timing couldn...This is a terrific series and the timing couldn't be better as I am heading to AZ next month to see "the boy" and my grandson. I have several "unscheduled" days and I'll be checking out some of these.
You haven't had any run-ins with anyone, have you?
Loved the selfie--I laughed at that one. I've only been reading your blog for a little bit. I figured you for an old guy......not someone younger than my son. Glad to see a younger fella out having an adventure.
